Tip Calculator

Calculate the tip and total for a bill and split it between any number of people. Free tip calculator.

Free to use. Runs in your browser: your files and text are not uploaded.

Type the bill, the tip percentage and the number of people. The tool shows the tip, the total and each person’s share.

How to use it

  1. Type the bill amount.
  2. Type the tip as a percentage.
  3. Type how many people are sharing. Leave it at 1 if you are paying alone.

The formula

  • Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100
  • Total = bill + tip
  • Each person pays = total ÷ number of people

Example: a bill of 84.00 with an 18% tip, split between 4 people. Tip = 84 × 18 ÷ 100 = 15.12. Total = 99.12. Each person pays 99.12 ÷ 4 = 24.78.

Working out a tip in your head

  • 10%: move the decimal point one place left. 10% of 84.00 is 8.40.
  • 20%: double the 10% figure. 16.80.
  • 15%: take 10% and add half of it. 8.40 + 4.20 = 12.60.

Tipping differs by country

Tipping customs vary widely. In the United States, tips make up a large part of restaurant servers’ pay and 15% to 20% is customary for table service. In many European countries a service charge is already included in prices or added to the bill, and people round up or leave a small amount. In Japan, tipping is not customary. Check the local practice when you travel, and check the bill for a service charge before adding a tip.

Limits

  • The split is equal. It does not handle people who ordered different amounts.
  • Amounts are rounded to two decimal places, so shares can differ from the total by a cent.
  • No currency symbol is shown. The maths is the same in any currency.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 15% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.15. On a bill of 50, a 15% tip is 7.50 and the total is 57.50.

How do I split a bill with the tip included?

Type the number of people. The tool divides the total, including the tip, equally and shows what each person pays.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Customs differ. Etiquette guides in the United States generally describe tipping on the pre-tax amount. Type whichever amount you want the tip based on.
