Grade Calculator
Free to use. Runs in your browser: your files and text are not uploaded.
Enter your scores and how much each one counts. The tool shows your grade so far and the score you need on what is left to reach your target.
How to use it
- Type one item per line: the score as a percentage, then its weight as a percentage. For example
90 20means 90% on something worth 20% of the course. - Type the overall grade you are aiming for.
- Read your current grade and the score needed on the rest.
The formulas
Current grade = sum of (score × weight) ÷ sum of weights
Score needed = (target × 100 − sum of (score × weight)) ÷ remaining weight
Worked example
| Item | Score | Weight | Score × weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 90 | 20 | 1,800 |
| Midterm | 85 | 30 | 2,550 |
| Project | 78 | 20 | 1,560 |
| So far | 70 | 5,910 |
Current grade = 5,910 ÷ 70 = 84.43%.
The final exam is the remaining 30%. To finish on 85% overall: (85 × 100 − 5,910) ÷ 30 = 2,590 ÷ 30 = 86.33% needed on the final.
If your course uses points
Convert each item to a percentage first. 42 out of 50 is 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%. If every point in the course counts equally, the weight of an item is its share of the total points.
Limits
- The weights you enter must not add up to more than 100.
- The tool assumes one score for everything still to come. If several items remain, the figure is the average you need across them.
- Dropped lowest scores, curves and extra credit are not handled.
- Letter-grade boundaries differ between schools, so the tool shows percentages only.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total of the weights. A 90 worth 20% and an 85 worth 30% give (90 × 20 + 85 × 30) ÷ 50 = 87%.
What score do I need on my final exam?
Enter your scores so far with their weights, and the overall grade you want. The tool shows the score needed on the part of the course still to come.
What if the score I need is above 100%?
Then the target cannot be reached without extra credit. Lower the target to see what is still possible.
