Time Calculator
Free to use. Runs in your browser: your files and text are not uploaded.
Add two lengths of time together, or subtract one from the other. Useful for timesheets, video lengths, race splits and cooking.
How to use it
- Type the first time as hours:minutes:seconds, for example
2:30:00. - Choose Add or Subtract.
- Type the second time. The answer updates as you type.
You can leave off the seconds: 1:45 means 1 hour 45 minutes. A single number such as 3 means 3 hours.
How it works
Both times are converted to seconds, added or subtracted, and converted back.
Example: 2:30:00 + 1:45:30
- 2:30:00 = 2 × 3,600 + 30 × 60 = 9,000 seconds
- 1:45:30 = 3,600 + 2,700 + 30 = 6,330 seconds
- Total = 15,330 seconds = 4:15:30
Decimal hours for timesheets
Payroll usually needs hours as a decimal, not as hours and minutes. Divide the minutes by 60:
| Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 15 | 0.25 |
| 30 | 0.5 |
| 45 | 0.75 |
| 20 | 0.3333 |
| 50 | 0.8333 |
So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45. The “In hours” line gives this figure.
Limits
- This tool works with lengths of time, not times on a clock. To find the hours between 9:15 AM and 5:40 PM, subtract
9:15from17:40using the 24-hour clock. - It does not handle dates. For days between dates, use the Date Calculator.
- Only two times can be combined at once. For a longer list, add the first two, then add the next to the result.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add hours and minutes?
Add the minutes first. Every 60 minutes becomes 1 hour. 2:45 + 1:30 is 3 hours and 75 minutes, which is 4:15.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes is 0.75 hours, so 7:45 is 7.75 hours. The tool shows this in the In hours line.
Can the answer be negative?
Yes. Subtracting a longer time from a shorter one gives a negative result, shown with a minus sign.
