GPA Calculator

Calculate your GPA on the 4.0 scale from letter grades and credits. Free college and high school GPA calculator.

Free to use. Runs in your browser: your files and text are not uploaded.

Work out a grade point average from your courses. Type one course per line: the grade, then the number of credits.

How to use it

  1. Write each course on its own line, for example A 3 or B+ 4.
  2. The GPA, total credits and total grade points update as you type.

If you leave out the credits, the course counts as 1 credit.

The scale used

Grade Points Grade Points
A+ or A 4.0 C 2.0
A- 3.7 C- 1.7
B+ 3.3 D+ 1.3
B 3.0 D 1.0
B- 2.7 D- 0.7
C+ 2.3 F 0.0

Worked example

Course Grade Credits Grade points
Statistics A 3 4.0 × 3 = 12.0
Programming B+ 4 3.3 × 4 = 13.2
Economics A- 3 3.7 × 3 = 11.1
Writing C 2 2.0 × 2 = 4.0
Total 12 40.3

GPA = 40.3 ÷ 12 = 3.36

Courses with more credits pull the average harder. The B+ in the 4-credit course affects this GPA twice as much as the C in the 2-credit course.

Limits

  • This is an unweighted GPA. Schools that give extra points for honours or advanced courses use a weighted scale, often out of 5.0.
  • Some schools count A+ as 4.3. Type 4.3 as a number if yours does.
  • Pass/fail, withdrawn and incomplete courses are usually left out of a GPA. Do not enter them.
  • Your school’s official GPA is the one on your transcript. Rounding rules and repeated courses can make it differ slightly.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add those up, and divide by the total credits. An A in a 3-credit course gives 4.0 × 3 = 12 grade points.

What is an A- or a B+ worth?

On the common 4.0 scale used here, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0 and B- is 2.7. Some schools use slightly different values, so check your own school's table.

Can I enter grade points as numbers?

Yes. Type a number such as 3.5 in place of a letter. That is useful if your school uses its own scale.
