How Morse code is written

Each letter is a pattern of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes). On this page:

  • a dot is . and a dash is -
  • letters are separated by one space
  • words are separated by /

So “HI THERE” is .... .. / - .... . .-. .

The alphabet

A .- H .... O --- V ...-
B -... I .. P .--. W .--
C -.-. J .--- Q --.- X -..-
D -.. K -.- R .-. Y -.--
E . L .-.. S ... Z --..
F ..-. M -- T - 1 .----
G --. N -. U ..- 0 -----

The most common letters have the shortest codes: E is one dot and T is one dash.

Limits

  • This is International Morse Code, the version set by the International Telecommunication Union. It covers A to Z, 0 to 9 and common punctuation.
  • Morse has no capital and small letters. Text translated back comes out in capitals.
  • Accented letters and other alphabets are not included.
  • The tool shows the code in writing. It does not play sound.

Frequently asked questions

What is SOS in Morse code?

SOS is three dots, three dashes, three dots: ... --- ... It was chosen as a distress signal because the pattern is easy to send and recognise. The letters do not stand for anything.

How do I type Morse code to translate it?

Use a full stop for a dot and a hyphen for a dash. Put one space between letters and a slash between words.

Why do I see a question mark in the result?

That character, or that group of dots and dashes, is not in the international Morse code table.
