What an emoji is

Emojis are text characters, defined by the Unicode standard in the same way as letters. That is why you can copy and paste them like words. The picture you see is drawn by the device showing it, so it changes from one brand to another while the meaning stays the same.

Some emojis are built from several characters joined together. A flag is two special letters: the flag of India is the letters I and N. A profession emoji such as ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป is a woman, an invisible joiner, and a laptop.

Your computer also has an emoji panel:

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy and paste an emoji?

Click the emojis you want. They are added to the box at the top. Press Copy, then paste them into your message or document.

Why does an emoji look different on another phone?

An emoji is a character code, and each company draws its own picture for it. The same emoji looks slightly different on Apple, Android, Windows and in different apps.

Why do some emojis show as a box or as two separate pictures?

Your device does not have a picture for that emoji yet. Newer emojis need a recent operating system.
