How it works

Unicode, the standard that defines every character computers can show, includes complete extra alphabets made for mathematics: bold, italic, script, gothic (Fraktur), double-struck, sans-serif and monospace. It also includes circled letters and wide letters. This tool swaps each ordinary letter for the matching letter in one of those alphabets.

Strikethrough and underline work differently. They add an invisible β€œcombining” character after each letter, which draws a line through or under it.

Limits

  • Screen readers, which read text aloud for blind and partially sighted people, may skip styled letters or read them one at a time as β€œmathematical bold a”. Avoid these styles for anything important.
  • Search does not match styled text. A name written in script letters will not be found by someone searching for the plain name.
  • Some sites strip or block these characters in usernames.
  • The upside-down style is shown in small letters only.

Frequently asked questions

How do these fonts work on Instagram and WhatsApp?

They are not really fonts. Each styled letter is a separate Unicode character, so it is plain text that you can paste anywhere text is accepted.

Why do I see boxes or question marks?

The device showing the text has no picture for that character. Older phones and some apps lack the rarer styles. Try a different style.

Do the styles work with numbers and other alphabets?

Bold, double-struck, sans-serif, monospace and wide also change digits. Letters outside A to Z, such as accented or Hindi letters, are left as they are.
