Where it comes from
The standard lorem ipsum passage is taken from De finibus bonorum et malorum (“On the Ends of Good and Evil”), a work on ethics by the Roman writer Cicero. A jumbled version of it became common as sample text in the 1960s, when Letraset printed it on its dry-transfer lettering sheets, and spread further in the 1980s with desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker.
“Lorem” itself is not a Latin word. It is the end of “dolorem”, meaning pain, cut in half.
How this tool builds the text
It picks words at random from the classic passage and groups them into sentences of 6 to 15 words and paragraphs of 4 to 7 sentences. The result has the rhythm of real writing without being readable.
Limits
- The text is random each time. It is not the original passage in order.
- It uses Latin-looking words only. A design for a language with longer words, such as German, or a different script may need its own sample text.
- Remove all placeholder text before publishing. Search the final page for “lorem” to be sure.
Frequently asked questions
What does lorem ipsum mean?
It has no meaning as written. The words are scrambled pieces of a Latin text by Cicero, written in 45 BC, about the nature of pleasure and pain.
Why do designers use lorem ipsum?
It fills a layout with text that looks natural but cannot be read, so people judge the design and are not distracted by the words.
Can I use the generated text freely?
Yes. The source text is more than 2,000 years old and is in the public domain.
