Cut a person out of a photo. The background becomes transparent, or a plain colour of your choice, and you download the result as a PNG. This tool works best on photos of people.
How to use it
- Choose a photo.
- Press Remove background. The first time, wait for the model to download.
- Pick a new background: transparent, white, black or any colour.
- Download the PNG.
How it works
The tool runs MODNet, an open-source model trained to separate people from their surroundings. For every pixel it estimates how much belongs to the person, from 0% to 100%. That estimate becomes the transparency of the picture, which is why edges such as hair fade out softly.
Limits
- The model was trained on portraits. Photos of objects, animals, cars or logos may come out badly.
- Fine hair, glass, and backgrounds close to the colour of the person’s clothes are the usual trouble spots.
- Photos larger than 2,400 pixels on the longest side are reduced to that size.
- Paid services use larger models and usually give cleaner edges. We chose this model because its licence (Apache 2.0) allows use on this site, which several better-known models do not.
- On older phones the processing can take a while.

Does it work on products, pets or logos?
It is built for photos of people. Other subjects sometimes work, but the result is often rough or incomplete.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The model is downloaded to your browser once, and your photo is processed on your own device.
