Random Word Generator
Free to use. Runs in your browser: your files and text are not uploaded.
Get one or more English words picked at random. Choose any kind of word, or only nouns, verbs or adjectives.
How to use it
- Choose the type of word.
- Type how many you want, from 1 to 50.
- Press Generate. Press it again for a new set, or Copy to copy the list.
How it works
The tool holds three lists of common English words: about 120 nouns (things, such as lantern and valley), about 75 verbs (actions, such as climb and whisper) and about 75 adjectives (describing words, such as gentle and frosty). It picks from the list you choose without repeating a word within one result.
Ways to use random words
- Drawing games: generate one noun and draw it for others to guess.
- Story starter: generate three words and write a paragraph that uses all of them.
- Brainstorming: pair a random adjective with a random noun to spark a product, band or team name.
- Language practice: generate five words and put each in a sentence.
- Improv: give each performer a word they must work into the scene.
Limits
- The lists are small and made of familiar words. This is not a full dictionary, so rare words do not appear.
- Words are English only.
- A few words can be more than one type. Storm, for example, is listed as a noun but can also be a verb.
- These words are easy to guess. Do not use them as passwords. Use the Password Generator.
