Name Generator

Generate random first and last names for characters, stories, games and test data. Male, female or any. Free.

Free to use. Runs in your browser: your files and text are not uploaded.

Get a list of random full names. Each one joins a first name and a surname picked at random.

How to use it

  1. Choose male names, female names, or any.
  2. Type how many you need, from 1 to 100.
  3. Press Generate, then Copy to copy the list. Press Generate again for a fresh set.

How it works

The tool holds a list of 59 male first names, 59 female first names and 77 surnames. They include names common in English-speaking countries and names from South Asia, East Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Latin America. For each result it picks one first name and one surname at random.

That gives 118 × 77 = 9,086 possible full names, so a long list may contain the odd repeat.

Ideas for using it

  • Writing: name minor characters quickly so you can keep writing.
  • Role-playing games: name the shopkeeper the players unexpectedly decide to talk to.
  • Design: fill a mockup with realistic-looking users.
  • Software testing: make sample records without using real customers’ details.

Limits

  • First names and surnames are paired at random, so a name may mix two cultures.
  • The lists are small next to the many thousands of names in real use.
  • For test data, remember that made-up names can still match real people. Do not pair them with real addresses or identity numbers.
  • For online handles, use the Username Generator.

Frequently asked questions

What can I use the names for?

Characters in stories and games, sample people in designs and presentations, and test data for software.

Are these real people?

No. Each name pairs a common first name with a common surname at random. Any match with a real person is a coincidence.

Can I get names from one country only?

Not at present. The lists mix names that are common in several parts of the world.
