Dice Roller
Free to use. Runs in your browser: your files and text are not uploaded.
Roll one die or many. Choose the number of sides, press Roll, and see every die and the total.
How to use it
- Type the number of dice, from 1 to 100.
- Choose the sides on each die: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 20 or 100.
- Press Roll. Press it again to roll again.
How it works
For each die, the tool picks a whole number from 1 to the number of sides, with every value equally likely. The numbers come from the browser’s cryptographic random generator.
Two six-sided dice
When two dice are added, middle totals are more likely because more combinations make them:
| Total | Ways | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| 2 or 12 | 1 each | 2.8% |
| 3 or 11 | 2 each | 5.6% |
| 4 or 10 | 3 each | 8.3% |
| 5 or 9 | 4 each | 11.1% |
| 6 or 8 | 5 each | 13.9% |
| 7 | 6 | 16.7% |
There are 6 × 6 = 36 equally likely combinations in all.
The standard dice set
Tabletop role-playing games use a set of seven dice: D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20 and a second D10 marked in tens. Rolling the two D10s together gives a number from 1 to 100, which this tool does directly with the D100 option.
The average roll of a fair die is (sides + 1) ÷ 2. A D6 averages 3.5 and a D20 averages 10.5.
Limits
- All dice in one roll have the same number of sides. For a mix such as 1D20 + 2D6, roll each kind separately and add them.
- Modifiers such as +3 are not added. Add them to the total yourself.
- Rolls are not saved or shared. For online play where others need to trust the roll, use a roller built into your game platform.
Frequently asked questions
Is the online dice roller fair?
Yes. Each die uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator, and every face has an equal chance.
What is the most likely total when rolling two dice?
Seven. It can be made in six ways out of 36, a chance of 16.7%. Two and twelve are the least likely, at one way each, or 2.8%.
What do D6 and D20 mean?
The number after D is the number of sides. D6 is the ordinary cube, and D20 is the twenty-sided die used in Dungeons and Dragons. 2D6 means roll two six-sided dice and add them.
