Record your voice online with your microphone and download the audio. Free, no sign-up, and the recording stays on your device.

00:00

Free to use. Runs in your browser: your files and text are not uploaded.

Press the button, speak, and download the recording. Useful for voice notes, practising a speech, language practice and quick audio messages.

How to use it

  1. Press Start recording and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  2. Speak. The clock shows how long you have been recording.
  3. Use Pause and Resume if you need a break.
  4. Press Stop. Listen to the recording, then press the download button to keep it.

Starting a new recording replaces the previous one, so download first.

How it works

Browsers have a built-in recorder that turns sound from the microphone into a compressed audio file. This page starts and stops that recorder and hands you the file. The format is chosen by the browser, which is why the file ending differs between Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

Getting a clearer recording

  • Record in a quiet room with soft furnishings. Bare walls and hard floors add echo.
  • Keep the microphone about a hand’s width from your mouth, slightly to one side to avoid popping sounds on P and B.
  • A headset or an external microphone is clearer than a laptop’s built-in one.
  • Do a ten-second test and listen back before a long recording.

Opening the file

WebM and Ogg files play in all modern browsers and in free players such as VLC. Some phone apps and older programs expect MP3 or M4A. If yours does, convert the file with an audio converter.

Recording other people

Laws on recording conversations differ by country and, in the United States, by state. Some require every person in the conversation to agree. Check the law where you are, and tell people before you record them.

Limits

  • The recording is held in memory. Very long recordings, of more than about an hour, may fail on devices with little memory.
  • If you reload or close the page before downloading, the recording is lost.
  • There is no editing, trimming or noise removal.
  • Recording works only on pages opened with https.
  • On phones, recording may stop when the screen locks or you switch apps.

Frequently asked questions

Is my recording uploaded?

No. The audio is recorded and kept in your browser's memory on your device. It is not sent to us. It exists only until you download it or leave the page.

What file format is the recording?

It depends on your browser. Chrome, Edge and Firefox record WebM or Ogg audio with the Opus codec. Safari records M4A (AAC).

Why can the page not hear my microphone?

Your browser asks for permission the first time. If you blocked it, click the padlock or settings icon beside the address bar, allow the microphone, and reload the page.
