How to use it
- Type your letters, between 2 and 15 of them. Order and capitals do not matter.
- Use
?for a blank tile or an unknown letter. - Press Unscramble.
Words are grouped by length, longest first. Each letter is used no more often than you typed it.
Example
The letters tralep make two six-letter words, palter and plater, and 101 words in all. The five-letter ones include alert, later, pearl, petal, plate and pleat, and the three-letter ones include ape, lap and tar.
How it works
The tool checks each word in its dictionary against your letters. A word is listed if every letter it needs is among yours, counting repeats. “Letter” needs two Ts and two Es, so it is found only if you typed at least two of each. A blank fills in for one missing letter.
The word list
The dictionary is the ENABLE word list, a public-domain list of about 173,000 English words that was compiled for word games. It is downloaded once, the first time you press the button (1.7 MB), and then kept by your browser.
Limits
- ENABLE dates from the 1990s. Recent additions to official Scrabble dictionaries are missing, and a few of its words are not in those dictionaries.
- It contains no proper nouns, abbreviations or words with hyphens or apostrophes.
- The tool finds single words. It does not split your letters into phrases of several words.
- At most 300 words are shown for each length.
- Many listed words are rare. A word being valid in a game does not mean it is in everyday use.
Frequently asked questions
How do I unscramble letters into words?
Type your letters in any order and press Unscramble. The tool lists every word that can be spelled from them, grouped by length with the longest first.
How do I use a blank tile?
Type a question mark for each blank. It stands for any letter. For example, c?t finds cat, cot, cut and act among others.
Are all the words valid in Scrabble?
The list is close to tournament word lists but not identical to the current official ones. Check the dictionary your game uses before relying on an unusual word.
